The novel follows Lucas Corso, a bibliophile hired to track down a manuscript by Alexandre Dumas. It has good characters and a strong plot, but I found the sheer number of literary references exhausting. It felt as though Pérez-Reverte wanted to include everything he had learned while researching the novel, which made parts of it feel forced. Without that excess, I would have considered it a great, fast-paced novel.
