Someone gave it to me 25 years ago and I only read it now. I understand why they chose it for me. It is the story of a Muslim from Granada forced to flee when Isabella and Ferdinand took the city, followed through a lifetime of adventures around the Mediterranean and as far as Timbuktu, a place I have always wanted to visit. It is both a great novel and a vivid portrait of the period.
