Kwajalein: the atoll that skipped 21 August 1993

Kwajalein is an atoll in the Marshall Islands, in the Pacific Ocean. In 1993 it went from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 August. Saturday the 21st was left out of its local calendar.

Where is Kwajalein?

An atoll is a group of low islands around a lagoon. Kwajalein belongs to the Marshall Islands. The distinction matters: the 1993 calendar change described here concerns Kwajalein, not a simultaneous change across the whole country.

From Friday to Sunday

The IANA time-zone database records a shift from UTC−12 to UTC+12. That is a difference of 24 hours: the clock can show the same time, but on the next day. An Associated Press report dated 22 August, quoted in IANA’s notes, described residents going to bed on Friday and waking up on Sunday.

Why 1969 also appears

The explorer includes an earlier stage beginning around 1969. This earlier change is less securely documented. IANA retains Shanks’s date; in a 2022 note, Paul Eggert explains that he is keeping it until better evidence emerges. We have not located a contemporary order that settles the question.

What the circle on the map means

Our outline uses a circle to show Kwajalein as a local exception, where a different date was kept. It is an explanatory symbol, not a surveyed maritime boundary or a legal limit established by a document we have inspected. The 1993 calendar change and the outline illustrating it rest on different evidence.

Two separate questions

We can identify the Saturday omitted in the 1993 record. The timing and circumstances of the earlier change still need a source closer to the events. Keeping the two questions separate prevents an approximate date from becoming a certainty through repetition.

Sources and scope

The date remains approximate in this reconstruction. A contemporary order or local record of the change is needed to establish it. Evidence record

The change concerns Kwajalein. It must not be extended to all the Marshall Islands or used to date the beginning of the earlier arrangement. Evidence record
